Somos Votantes Education Fund Celebrates First Wave of Seeds of Relief Program, Delivering Over $133 Million in Medical Debt Relief to Over 128,000 Nevadans
Historic program concluded with community celebration in Las Vegas, marking a new chapter in direct economic relief efforts
LAS VEGAS, NV — Today, Somos Votantes Education Fund celebrates the successful completion of the first wave of its Seeds of Relief program, which eliminated over $133 million in medical debt for over 128,000 hardworking Nevadans across Clark and Washoe counties.
The first wave of the economic relief program concluded with a free, family-friendly celebration at the Springs Preserve Amphitheater in Las Vegas, bringing together over 750 community members to mark this historic milestone in direct economic relief. The event – in partnership with Fiesta 98.1FM – featured free toys, Christmas photos, food, live music, prizes, a resource fair, and activities for families.
"Today we celebrate nearly 130,000 hardworking Nevadans who are now free from the crushing weight of medical debt," said Melissa Morales, President and Founder of Somos Votantes Education Fund. "Seeds of Relief has shown what's possible when we take direct action to help hardworking people thrive instead of just survive. This program gave entire families breathing room to focus on building a good life instead of impossible choices between care and groceries. And this is just the beginning — we remain committed to delivering real solutions that make life more affordable for those who need it most."
"When I opened the letter and saw that my medical debt had been cleared, it truly felt like a blessing,” said María, one of the recipients. “This relief gives me room to focus on my health and my future, and I’m so grateful to everyone at Somos Votantes Education Fund who made this possible. It’s a weight I no longer have to carry, and it gives me hope for what comes next.”
On the week of November 24th, eligible community members received branded letters from partner organization, national nonprofit Undue Medical Debt indicating which debt(s) had been eliminated. There was no application process — recipients simply opened their mailboxes to discover some or all of their medical debt was gone.
This relief comes as healthcare costs continue to skyrocket and health insurance premiums are expected to rise, forcing hardworking families across the country to face impossible choices between paying for care or covering essential expenses. Recent national polling by Undue Medical Debt highlights the growing healthcare affordability crisis, with nearly half of respondents (45%) struggling to afford common medical expenses and more than one-third (35%) carrying medical debt.
