This Week: Over 128,000 People in Nevada to Receive Life-Changing News in the Mail About Medical Debt Relief

Letters arriving week of Thanksgiving holiday to inform hardworking Nevadans their medical debt has been eliminated thanks to Somos Votantes Education Fund—no application required

LAS VEGAS, NV — This week, as working families prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday amid rising costs, over 128,000 hardworking Nevadans in Clark County and Washoe County will receive a letter in the mail with life-changing news: their medical debt has been eliminated thanks to Somos Votantes Education Fund.

Eligible community members did not need to apply, and there was no application process. Those who qualify for this medical debt relief have medical debts that are 5% or more of their annual income or earn at or below four times the federal poverty level (just over $100,000 for a family of three). This first wave of medical debt relief is part of Seeds of Relief, a new program by Somos Votantes Education Fund aimed at providing direct economic relief for those who need it the most.

"Over 128,000 hardworking Nevadans will be checking their mailboxes this week to discover they're free from the crushing weight of medical debt," said Melissa Morales, President and Founder of Somos Votantes Education Fund. "Through Seeds of Relief, we're proving that direct action can deliver real relief. This is about giving families breathing room to build their futures. And this is just the beginning — we're committed to expanding this work because every family deserves the chance to thrive and build a better life."

The program eliminated $128,933,215 in medical debt for 124,916 people in Clark County, NV and an additional $4,898,948 for 3,660 in Washoe County, NV. This relief comes as healthcare costs continue to skyrocket and health insurance premiums are expected to rise, forcing hardworking families across the country to face impossible choices between paying for care or covering rent and groceries.

On Saturday, December 6th, Somos Votantes Education Fund will host a free community event in Las Vegas celebrating their Seeds of Relief program. The family-friendly event will take place from 11 a.m to 3 p.m. at the Springs Preserve Amphitheater located at 333 S. Valley View Blvd Las Vegas, NV. The event will feature free toys, free photos with Santa Claus, food, live music, prizes, a resource fair and more. First come, first serve. Space is limited. To RSVP visit somosnv.org/holiday-2025

This relief builds on Somos Votantes Education Fund and its partner organization Somos Votantes’ year-round commitment to empowering working families through community engagement across the country. From door-to-door conversations to community gatherings and celebrations, Somos connects with hardworking people where they are, addressing the economic concerns that matter most to their daily lives.
